Hip hop mixt1 tapes first emerged on the scene in mid-1970s New York City. These early recordings featured pioneering artists such as Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa. As demand for these illicitly obtained soundtracks continued to grow, so did their availability.

The advent of compact discs (CD) technology marked a turning point for mixtape culture. With the rise of peer-to-peer file sharing platforms like Napster in late 1990s, music piracy reached an all-time high.

In recent years however there has been resurgence interest among collectors and enthusiasts towards physical copies of classic hip hop singles on vinyl records and cassette tapes.
